October 1, 2025
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As you may be aware, on Monday, September 29, the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) announced that Alberta teachers voted to reject the recent ATA/Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association Memorandum of Agreement. As a result, the ATA has declared a province-wide strike beginning Monday, October 6, 2025.
All Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWPSD) teachers are members of the ATA. Therefore, all PWPSD schools will be closed effective Monday, October 6 for the duration of the labour disruption. This includes the cancellation of student transportation, extra-curricular activities, and any prearranged trips or scheduled events.
While we are hopeful that a settlement will be reached, families should be prepared to make childcare arrangements should a labour action occur.
Community-operated daycare programs located within the school may continue to operate; please contact your daycare provider directly with any questions or concerns.
As Friday, October 3 will be the last day of school for students and teachers, please ensure your child removes all perishable items from their locker and brings home any personal belongings they may need. All Division-owned devices must remain at the school. There will be no public access to the school after Friday for the duration of the labour disruption.
Schools will not be providing any schoolwork to students for the duration of the strike. The Government of Alberta has announced it will be offering financial support and educational resources for families. For more information, please see the Government of Alberta’s announcement at https://www.alberta.ca/parent-supports-during-school-closure or by visiting our Alberta Teachers’ Association Labour Action webpage at www.pwpsd.ca.
At PWPSD, we remain committed to our students, staff, and families. Although the Division is not directly involved in the ongoing negotiations, we support our school communities, and hope for a timely resolution. We will continue to update our Alberta Teachers’ Association Labour Action webpage at www.pwpsd.ca as new information becomes available.
We recognize the significant impact this situation has on our families, staff, and communities. We deeply value each of you, and we are grateful for your continued understanding and care as this situation unfolds.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out by emailing [email protected].
Sincerely,
Shawn O’Shea
Superintendent of Schools
